Remedial Massage
Remedial massage uses a variety of techniques to restore muscle balance and help remedy various musculoskeletal problems caused by issues such as postural imbalances, frequent computer use etc. It incorporates massage, manipulation of soft tissues and exercise and stretching advice to reduce symptoms of overuse injuries, treat muscular aches and pains
and correct postural problems.
Remedial massage is a therapeutic deep tissue massage which is also used to speed up the healing process after injury. It is used but not limited to treat strains, sprains, muscle pulls, muscle tears and most injuries where the skin is intact. Deep tissue massage helps to remove blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions left after injury, speeds up recovery and encourages more complete healing. It also increases blood and lymphatic flow, particularly in the areas being treated.
Remedial massage treats the whole body, identifying and treating the cause of the disorder and not just the symptoms after a thorough assessment of the condition of the athlete’s soft tissues through conversation, postural assessment and palpation.

Sports Massage
Sports Massage is a speciality within Remedial Massage that uses the same range of clinical skills. Many ‘so called’ sports injuries are often caused by an athlete’s posture and/or other factors outside of their sport; however the weakness / injury becomes apparent during increased activity and pressure on the body’s tissues. The real difference with sports massage is the focus on recovery from training and the early identification and treatment of potential soft tissue problems. Over a succession of treatments, the therapist can monitor how the client is responding to training. This can allow the athlete to ‘fine-tune’ their training to avoid injury and enhance performance.
Sports Massage uses similar techniques and principles as for Remedial Massage but is applied in a way that meets the specific needs of an athlete or active person and to help them achieve their optimum performance in their chosen sport, at the gym, or for a specific race / event.
Regular treatments are a good way to monitor the effects of a training program and lifestyle by being able to gauge the condition of the muscles, ligaments and tendons from one treatment to the next.

Soft Tissue Therapy
Soft Tissue Therapy is on a much higher clinical level and sports massage is just one small part of it. The aim is to treat all minor and chronic injuries, whether caused via sport or any other lifestyle factor, using massage and other more advanced techniques. It also aims to identify the underlying causes of injury and offer more long-term improvements in physical well-being and injury prevention.
Everyone suffers with these injuries at some time and they can badly affect their quality of life but treatment is often hard to find. Main-steam medicine may be good at treating more serious conditions but often waiting times for NHS appointments for musculoskeletal conditions are lengthy.
Soft Tissue Therapy integrates three essential clinical elements:
Assessment
Applying a range of assessment methods to determine whether Soft Tissue Therapy is appropriate and devise a suitable treatment plan for the individual client.
Treatment
Applying a range of soft tissue techniques (including massage) to aid recovery from injury and improve soft tissue condition and joint mobility.
Rehabilitation
Offering advice on a range of remedial exercises and lifestyle factors aimed at speeding up recovery, preventing injury recurrence as well as improving posture, performance and function.
