Frequently Asked Questions about Sports and Remedial Massage / Soft Tissue Therapy
I am not a sports person, can I still have a treatment?
See The Biggest Misconceptions of Sport and Remedial Massage
What should I wear?
The massage is performed directly on the skin and lubricants are used. You will need to remove some clothes in most cases but I will respect your modesty and cover areas not being worked on with a towel.
Men – if you are having your lower back or above the knee treated it is recommended that you wear stretchy boxer shorts or underpants.
Women – if you are having treatment for an area above your waist please ensure that you wear a normal bra as a sports bra / crop top bra may prevent effective treatment.
If I am a runner and have injuries that I think are due to running should I bring my trainers?
Yes, please do. The way the soles of your trainers have been worn can give me some additional useful information.
What is involved with a Sports and Remedial Massage / Soft Tissue Therapy?
On your first appointment I will take a medical history, personal details, sports and hobbies and a full description of the issue, including types of pain, time of day, movements that hurt etc). If relevant I will then do an assessment of your posture looking at the positioning and tension of the muscles and joints and the movement of them. I may give some advice on how to realign any postural issues.
With all the information from our discussion and the postural assessment I will then determine a treatment plan for you and start the treatment.
I may sometimes treat an area that isn’t hurting, as issues with some muscles can cause pain in other muscles. I will explain in full why I am doing this. I will use my hands, fingers, thumbs, forearm†and elbow to apply techniques.
If relevant, I will provide advice on any stretching or strengthening exercises for you to do at home that would complement my treatment.
Do I need to buy / bring any equipment?
No
Do I need to tell my GP that I am having a treatment?
If you have a condition that may be contraindicated to massage then I may require you to obtain permission from your GP prior to a massage.
How long is a session
Romsey - The first consultation will take 75 minutes to include a full case history and assessment. Follow up treatments are 60 minutes. Occasionally I may offer longer appointments if necessary.
Ringwood - All appointments are 60 minutes.
What is expected of clients?
You may have to move into different positions on the massage couch depending on the areas to be treated. I may recommend exercises, making changes to your lifestyle or work environment to make the treatments more effective.

How soon can I come and see you after injuring myself?
I cannot treat acute injuries as massage increases blood flow and can make inflammation and swelling worse. Within the first 72 hours of a injury I recommed that you use the PRICE procedure:
P - Protect the injured tissue.
R - Rest the injured tissue.
I - Ice for 10 minutes three times a day at least. Note that you should not apply the ice directly to the skin, always wrap in some cloth and only ice until the skin goes white, not red.
C - Compression - if possible compress the injured tissue / limb to reduce swelling.
E - Elevate the injured tissue above the heart if possible.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.
Will you treat personal information confidentially?
Absolutely. Your personal information will not be disclosed to anyone without your prior consent.
How many treatments will I need?
That really depends on the type of injury, how long you have had it and how you respond to treatment. It may be that you require a number of treatments to resolve your problem and due to this I offer a number of packages that range from only £35 per treatment.
Is there anything I need to do to before a treatment?
Avoid any excessive exercise on the same day as your treatment as your muscles may be too tender. However if you are having a post event / race ‘flush through’ massage, this does not apply.
Is there anything I need to do after a treatment?
Everyone reacts differently to a treatment. Some people feel great and have gone on to perform at their best in a race and others feel very tired and lethargic. Some people also report tenderness in the muscles. All of this is normal and will generally disappear within 24-48 hours.
It is recommended that you drink at least two pints of water in the hours post treatment as this will flush through your kidneys all of the waste products that have been massaged out of your muscles. Some people may also have stronger urine for a few hours.
Can I exercise after a treatment?
That really depends on how you feel. If you are being treated due to an injury I will discuss this with you at the end of your treatment. If you are having a maintenance treatment then you can exercise afterwards but with caution until you know you feel ok.
Do you have parking facilities?
Yes
Do you work 9am-5pm?
Each day is different, but over the week I offer appointments from as early as 09:15am and I have been known to work until 10pm when very busy!!! My evenings get booked up very quickly though. Please call for available appointments, I will endeavour to be as flexible as possible for you!
Apologies but I do not work weekends.
How can I pay?
Either by cheque or cash, I do not take payment by debit and credit cards.
Can I buy someone treatment as a gift?
Yes you can. We have vouchers available for £10 upwards to contribute towards a treatment and vouchers for a treatment or treatment package.
Do you sell any products to help with my injury? ie: foam rollers, wobble cushions, resistance bands?
I sell foam roller, massage sticks, massage balls, balance pads, resistance bands and golf balls (for the soles of your feet!). Please ask if you need any other product as I may be able to purchase them for you at a lower cost than some places.
