What is Sports and Remedial Massage / Soft Tissue Therapy and who can it benefit?
In my opinion, the two biggest misunderstandings regarding Sports and Remedial Massage / Soft Tissue Therapy are:
1/ It’s just for athletes
Sports and Remedial Massage / Soft Tissue Therapy is for everyone; young, old, fit, unfit, fat, thin, tall, short, aches and pains or no aches and pains!
Injuries can occur whilst engaging in sporting activities, however, they are more commonly caused by postural issues such as a bad posture whilst
· Driving
· Standing
· Sitting
· Working at a computer, Playstation, XBox etc
· Carrying children
· Lifting
· Or just even reaching for something
Injuries can also be sustained due to a weak core (the core is basically all the posture supporting muscles from your shoulders to your thighs) or an imbalance in muscle groups.
So - Sports and Remedial Massage / Soft Tissue Therapy is NOT just for athletes!

2/ It’s painful
If you have an issue within a muscle, joint area or muscle group then generally it will cause you some discomfort just moving it.
The main aim of Sports and Remedial Massage / Soft Tissue Therapy is to bring a dysfunctional (and often tender) muscle or muscle group back to being functional (and without pain). I will use a number of techniques to achieve this, some of which may cause discomfort due to the muscle being damaged. However I work based on regular feedback from my clients. Applying too much pressure is not the best approach as the muscle will tense up and the best treatment is with a relaxed muscle. Some techniques that involve relaxed stretching with breathing are totally painless and sometimes quite pleasant.
